It’s a possibility, but as a preventative measure, you should never eat it. You can remove the brown parts and still eat the parts of the lettuce that are still green and crisp.

Lettuce turns brown due to oxidation; water will usually collect at the bottom of the bag during this process. When this happens, it becomes food for mold and that in turn can make you sick.

Of course a little browning is natural and is unrelated to mold. When preparing a salad in advance, handling the lettuce and breaking it into smaller pieces with your bare hands is recommended because using a metal knife causes the lettuce to brown even faster.

Also, storing the lettuce in a tightly closed container helps to keep it fresh.

Uric acid is a product of waste material found in the urine and blood from the chemical processes of the body. In case of gout, the monosodium urate or more popularly called the uric acid crystals are being deposited on the articular cartilage of joints, tendons and surrounding tissues. The crystal deposits are due to the increase of uric acid concentration in the blood stream.

Gout is characterized by inflammation of the tissues that could also burst through the skin. That is why people suffering with gout sometimes have sinuses discharging a material white as chalk. Moreover, gout is also known as metabolic arthritis.

Gout has visible symptoms. Persons with gout usually suffer with swelling and pain in the joints especially in the hands and feet. There is also an The presence of agonizing, sudden, unexpected burning pain, redness of skin in the areas affected, warmness and stiffness of the joints are also felt. Sometimes, patients also become feverish. The crystals inside the joints and the inflammation of the tissues around the joints cause the pain.

Gout usually attacks in the upper and lower extremities especially when these parts of the body lack exercise. The lack of exercise could cause the crystals to be easily deposited because the joints are at rest and the blood is also flowing into a smoother flow. However, almost 75 percent of first attacks of gout are recorded in the big toe. But aside from not, gout is not limited to the big toe, it could also attack other joints in the feet and hands like in the ankle, heel, instep, knee, wrist, elbow, fingers, and spine. Gout in the spine often results in backaches and difficulty in moving because the spinal column becomes stiff. Poor blood circulation in fingers due to earlier injury could also lead to gout.

Men between the ages of 40 and 50 are most prone in developing gout. Protein-rich foods are often the cause of high levels of uric acid. Alcohol intake could also affect the level of uric acid and can cause acute attacks of gout. Moreover, the development of gout could also be a result of hereditary factors.

People with high levels of uric acid in the blood are could also not develop gout as long as the urate is within the normal range. However, when a person suspects that he or she is already developing gout, the urate test should be administered after the attack has subsided. Through complete blood count, the level of uric acid in the blood is also determined. Other tests include electrolytes, renal function and erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Early diagnosis of gout could prevent the patient to develop severe arthritis.

Get information on gout, including gout symptoms, gout causes, gout triggers, and how to manage gout at http://www.gout.com/. Learn more about the role of uric acid and hyperuricemia as well as how lifestyle and diet can affect this condition. And by sharing information about your gout, you can help researchers identify factors that cause repeated gout attacks. Conducted by a collaborative team at the Boston University School of Medicine, this study is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the American College of Rheumatology.

There are various types of skin diseases such as skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, acne, sunburn, impetigo, scabies, warts, erythema infectiosum, ulcers, tinea, herpes and pruritis. The skin becomes red, swollen and burnt due to irritation and inflammation. Due to some allergies, irritants, genetic makeup and problems in the immune system, the skin can suffer from dermatitis and hives. Skin disorders are caused by absorption of irritants and so, one should wear proper skin protective clothes, like gloves, aprons and overalls.

Vitiligo or Leukoderma is a skin disease that occurs due to loss of pigment and results in irregular pale skin patches. Vitiligo can be caused due to stress that affects the immune system and eliminates the skin pigment. The skin patches may shrink, grow or remain the same in size. The white patches spread on various body parts such as the limbs, torso, face and groin. With time, the vitiligo affected skin patches re-pigment and other skin areas become affected. If the disease infects the scalp then the color of the hair becomes white. Sometimes golden brown patches appear around the eyes, nostrils and mouth.

Vitiligo has an important effect on the psychology of the patient. Sometimes, people with vitilig can feel depressed due to the changes in their appearance. In some cultures, people having vitiligo, are thought to be evil and demon possessed. In mild cases of vitiligo, the skin can be hidden using makeup or camouflage solutions. Dermatologists also prescribe corticosteroid cream for skin patches. The exposure of skin to long-wave ultraviolet rays from the sun is also beneficial for the patient. The application of immunomodulator creams like Protopic and Elidel helps in repigmentation of the skin when used with ultra violet ray treatment. The chemical depigmentation of skin through Monobenzone results in complete or partially complete depigmentation.

Proper skin care keeps the skin healthy and decreases the probability of any skin diseases. With age, the number of blood vessels in the skin decreases, the oil glands become less active and this makes the skin fragile and wrinkled. Ultraviolet rays also causes damage to the skin and can cause wrinkles, rough skin, liver spots and even cancerous skin tumors. The complete sun protection for the skin can be attained by avoiding the sun during high-intensity peak hours, by wearing protective clothing and by using sunscreen when outside. Smoking results in a narrowing of the blood vessels that further results in a decrease of blood flow and a supply of both oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This damages the elasticity and strength of the skin and increases wrinkles. Daily skin care should be done by cleansing the skin twice or thrice daily and then applying moisturizer to maintain natural skin moisture levels. These simple skin care habits keep the skin healthy and also prevents any skin disorders.

An allergy is a super-sensitivity to allergy triggers called allergens. Common airborne allergens include pollen from trees, grasses and weeds, molds, animal dander, dust and dust mites.

Allergies can have a big impact on your daily activities. You may be constantly fatigued, irritable, or just not feeling well. People with allergies often have difficulty concentrating, which can affect performance and even lead to absence from work or school. Many allergy sufferers have to give away pets, avoid foods they enjoy or curtail their outdoor activities. Allergic rhinitis or “hay fever” is one of the most common types of allergy. Typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis include sneezing, stuffy or runny nose, itchy or watery eyes, itchy throat and headaches.

Your eyesight is one of the most important things you possess. Taking good care of your eyes is crucial for eye health. However, sometimes the eye is susceptible to various diseases and conditions that you simply cannot prevent. Fortunately, there are treatments available for these problems. Here are the most common eye problems experienced and information on their treatment:

Allergies: Eye allergies are common and affect countless people around the world. Itchy, watery, swollen and red eyes are some symptoms of eye allergies. Over-the-counter or prescription allergy medications and eye drops provide easy relief.

Astigmatism: An astigmatism is an abnormal curvature of your cornea. Although this condition may worsen with age, it is easy to remedy with glasses, corrective contact lenses or LASIK surgery.

Blepharitis: This condition is an inflammation of the eye and eyelid that can lead to uncomfortable irritation, watering, and a crusty buildup. Blepharitis sufferers will commonly feel like there is something in the eye. This problem is often caused by a bacterial infection. Treat blepharitis with antibiotics, soothing drops, silicone punctal plugs, warm compresses and occasionally steroids.

Cataracts: A common problem for the elderly is cataracts. Cataracts refers to the clouding of the eye caused by a clumping of protein. This is caused by the aging process. Cataracts start out small and gradually get bigger with time. Cataract surgery is a safe, common procedure that your eye care professional can easily perform to remove the cataracts.

Dry Eye Syndrome: This uncomfortable condition is caused by the lack of proper lubrication in the eye. Chronic dryness, burning and itching are common symptoms of this syndrome. Dry eye syndrome can be caused by menopause or from certain medications. Contact lens wearers also commonly complain of excessive dryness of the eyes. Certain eye diseases and conditions can also cause this problem. Your eyecare professional can prescribe or recommend drops such as artificial tears to alleviate the problem.

Macular Degeneration: Also known as AMD, this condition is the leading cause of vision loss in individuals over the age of 65. Your eye doctor can educate you about the different kinds of macular degeneration. Although there is no cure for this condition, there may be ways your eye doctor can improve your eyesight.

If you experience these or any other eye problems, seek treatment right away from your eyecare professional.
